Retaining Walls

Our stone retaining walls are constructed with no concrete or mortar and are designed to retain enbankments without buckling. They can be built in a range of sizes from one foot in height to six feet or higher. They are both functional and ascetically pleasing.

Below you will find pictures of some of our work. They will demonstrate differences in the sizes of the walls and also their design and structure.

Note: You can click on most of the pictures to enlarge them.

The materials used to construct a dry-laid stone retaining wall can range in size from 1"-2" in thickness to 10"-12" or larger. The stones can be cut to fit more tightly or they can be stacked "as are" for a more natural setting as can be seen in the next group of pictures.

This dry-laid retaining wall to the left and right is over six feet high at the highest point. The style of stacking used in this wall is what we call a "loose fit". With this method of stacking, the structural integrity of the wall is not compromised. This wall, as with all our retaining walls, does not allow the ground from behind the wall to wash through.
Various limestone was used to build a four foot high wall along the driveway.

In constructing this four foot high dry-laid retaining wall a number of the limestone pieces are in excess of 300lbs each.

Please note the two sample walls to the upper right and lower right of this text.  You will notice in the upper right sample, the wall is graduated into the bank within about a 12-foot distance.  In the sample to the lower right, the wall is step tapered over about a 30-foot distance.
